I think cake is acceptable for elevenses :D

I happened upon a Wikipedia article yesterday, and was very pleased to see it reaffirm what I have always considered the correct order and quantity of daily meals:

Breakfast
Elevenses ("Second breakfast" in some parts of Europe, those funny foreigners hoho)
Lunch
Tea
Dinner
Supper

There's no need to got more than 3 hours without eating, except to sleep :P

They're getting Europe mixed up with middle earth again.

What were those ladies called who served you food at school? And what did they serve you? What time was that? I rest my case.

Brunch was listed as "an American meal replacing breakfast, elevenses and lunch". I didn't think it was worth mentioning.

First sensible post (not by me) in this thread so far.

Is it? I remember it being used in the Seventies as a late breakfast and early lunch. Sunday mornings were when we had them.

I thought it did, but I can no longer find the reference to America.

Rather, it says: "Oxford English Dictionary cites Punch magazine which wrote the term was coined in Britain in 1895 to describe a Sunday meal for "Saturday-night carousers" in the writer Guy Beringer's article "Brunch:A Plea" in Hunter's Weekly"

I like the Dubai entry, which is rather special:

"Friday Brunch is considered something of an institution in Dubai. Many large hotels offer an all inclusive drinks and food buffet during early afternoons, and large groups of ex-pats and tourists make this the highlight of their weekend, with parties going on well into the night. Prices vary, starting at around AED 100 up to AED 550... The latter usually involves gourmet food and limitless champagne."

Early afternoon and well into the night!
