One of our peculiar religious hang-ups from yesteryear - what do you make of it, and do you foreigners ;) have any curious laws like it?

Also, it's a bit cheeky that some Christians are hitting the wine in the meantime

I think this year particularly the pubs and bars have been hit very badly.
First the Christmas trade was wrecked by the flag rioters, then this activity went on for months, often worst at the weekends, so that was another whole load of trade that was lost, and now this.
I'm sure the extreme cold weather is also keeping trade away from the establishments that sell booze too.
Can't blame them for being annoyed and just wanting to protect their businesses as best they can.

I think that the pubs could be allowed extra flexibility for Easter. The problem will not be the country pubs but the city centre pubs. I expect that the police will have something to say about opening times.

I've no idea what the opening hour restrictions are here, if any. I'll have a look and see if I can find anything.

To be honest, I've been to a pub once in the last 5 years, apart from when I visited Ireland, but that was partly because the hotel was in the middle of nowhere and it was either light pub-grub in the evening or darned expensive restaurant (we get about 10€ a day food allowance in Germany, when travelling).

Years ago the pub would only open for a couple of hours on Sunday lunch and would not even open in the evening. Sunday evenings used to be 7pm to 10.30 pm and that varied depending on local magistrates.

Lidl was closed Sunday. So they close for Jesus' 'birth' and 'rebirth'.

Seriously? We get £100 a day!

15 years ago I used to get £6 for lunch and £25 for dinner. Happy days, for a while. That went down to £4 for lunch and then nothing, and evening meals went down to not enough to cover pretty much any hotel meal. I then left the company.

We have no policy here, but if I'm with one of the bosses they'll pay for the evening meal but not for lunch. Your expected to feed yourself as you would in the office.

We get nothing for lunch and up to £35 for supper (but no alcohol will be paid for) - of course if the bill just says "meal" then who is to know

It is a little more than a tanner, but not much. That is for the whole day, breakfast, lunch and supper. And if the hotel doesn't have a complimentary breakfast, then that cost is taken off of the amount they reimburse for the hotel bill.

We only get £20 for the evening meal, but it can include 1 alcoholic beverage. Any food/drink during normal working hours isn't covered. Breakfast comes out of the accommodation allowance (£85/night if less than 4 nights, £100/night if more). I'm now not sure what we can claim if we work a single night shift away, which is probably a pretty likely scenario...

Think my hotels have been £180 - £250 a night :)

Think I better shut up now

But if I'm going anywhere, it's likely to be the delightful town of Tamworth. I think that more than makes up for any limits on budget...
