Post subject:  Do you want apps with that?

Our whole family now has smartphones and my fiance's extended family also have a lot of smartphones, but one thing has been nagging at me.

Why do they have smartphones?

My fiance has my old iPhone on my old contract, so she has a data plan (1GB a month, but she uses about 5MB a month for her Yahoo! Email).

The girls don't have data plans with their phones.

None of them have any 3rd party apps installed, they don't even have Apple or Google account with which they could download or buy apps. One of her brothers is the same, no email on the device, doesn't use any apps, still stores his contacts on the SIM card.

I think only one brother has installed any 3rd party apps and uses it as a smartphone.

So, how do you use yours?

Me? I used to have lots of apps installed and if you look at what I've downloaded over the years, there are a lot of apps. But I probably have less than 10 3rd party apps currently installed.

Counting the pre-installed WP8 ones it's probably between 11 and 50.
I've removed a fair few of the pre-installed Samsung ones that came on my phone as I wasn't using them and I'm thinking another one may be about to bite the dust.

As this is the first phone I've had that actually does apps (properly) some of the apps I've downloaded have undoubtedly been due to novelty value and I doubt most of them will survive in the long run.

I'm not sure how many it has, but I use the call, text and alarm clock apps.

I have more than 250 apps, though use a few a lot. Task management with Things. Radio with TuneIn Pro and the BBC Radio apps. TV with the TVCatchup app, and all the various iPlayer apps. The amazon and eBay apps for shopping. A few weather apps as many have unique features. A few news apps and a few google apps like YouTube. 1Password for passwords obviously. WordClock like an alarm clock but without the alarms as it has a great low light setting, which works great as I leave the screen on. Meters for tracking my electricity usage. Photo Remote for adding photos to Home Inventory. Topcashback to check my account and to find deals when shopping online, this week looking for cash back deals on magazine subscriptions. LicenseKeeper to keep track of my software licences. Sky wifi to find free local wifi. A few film related apps like Run Pee IMDB and BBFC. Also lots of travel apps for things like hotels, flights taxis buses etc.

I've a bunch of apps I tried out but need to delete. I don't use that many apps since I'd sooner jump to the site itself, most of them are 'functional' affairs; browser, video, shortcuts. And bar the browser, they barely get used!

I mostly use my phone to stave off boredom in work

I have quite a few.
Things I use frequently: Mail, Safari, Calendar, Messages, Photos, Camera, Camera+, Mercury, VLC Remote, VLC Streamer, Dropbox, Rowmote, Facebook, Instagram, TVCatchup, eBay, Paypal, my bank app, Google Maps, Glympse, NavFree, SatNav 2 and right now Real Racing 3.
There's a few other apps that occasionally come out to play, like Viber, Autotrader, Light Meter.
In total, I've about 70 apps on the phone, not including the OS standards.

Call it 85. Quite a few of which I can't get rid of, despite wanting to.

I ran out of room on mine so went through all the apps to see what I can delete. I think I got rid of a couple of "fremium" games which are pretty much unplayable without paying every five minutes, but the rest I all wanted to keep. It's close to a hundred I'd guess.

Yes, if I wasn't one of the few people bringing some cheerfulness to the room, it would probably get complained about.

I have perhaps around 40.

I've seen a few people with smartphones who have no apps or no data plan. I think they see that other people have all of this stuff, and then after getting the phone don't realise how much it costs.

About a dozen I think - news, weather, cricket, currency.

In some respects the smart phone can make working tolerable. It does surprise me how many have Smartphones and do not use the features that their phones come with. Apparently Android users do not use their internet access anywhere near as much as iOS users. I wonder why? Could it be that they have signed up to cheaper deals with data caps so are far more careful with it. Since I bought my iPhone my 3G data usage has been 2.4Gb over 6 months. Though I have stopped streaming TV and video except when absolutely necessary.
