Will it make much difference to you if it ever does arrive ( )?

I'm the guy who runs around switching off enormous bulbs and wanting to slap my father for how often he boils the kettle - I don't even pay the bill!

I am not sure if it will save me much money. If they slap me with the bill for installing it, that will amount to an additional 35% of my annual bill. I did a price comparison and found that I am already on the cheapest deal so it would be a big increase. I normally use the web to update my meter readings anyway. Since it will be the power generators that really benefit in that they can avoid increasing capacity by turning off low priority devices at peak times then why should I pay for it to be installed?

We tried getting a smart meter last year.
It couldn't get an O2 phone signal under the stairs where the meter is.
The engineer did mention there would be a future version that could use any network's mobile signal, but for now we have to stick with the old one.

It wouldn't cut my energy use anyway. I couldn't be arsed to monitor it. I wanted it for the accurate bills.

The gf got one that clips round the point where the power comes in, sends it wirelessly to a receiver in the house which updates every few seconds, very cool bit of kit to have!

I think B&Q sell them but they aren't smart meters, just smart readers for elec

I have something similar. I think mine was called Owl monitor and was so you can monitor usage second by second. I really should set it up again.

I think it's the same brand, she got hers as a freebie from work years ago, it's a good bit of kit, especially to see the energy used just sticking the oven or washing machine on!

Interesting to see the difference of using a lamp with an energy saving bulb in the sitting room instead of the main light fitting which has 5 lights

The ones I've read about use wi-fi, not 3G, but the security is so weak that anybody driving down the street can gain control of the things!

Additionally, the Vailant eco energy heating system (generates heat and electricity through the gas fire boiler), has a number of weaknesses. Unfortunately, you are required to forward FTP, HTTP and HTTPS to the boiler on your router, otherwise they will refuse to service it! Hacking it is easy, none of the passwords are encrypted, when you log on and a bug in the Java code means it will actually dump all users names and passwords in clear text, if you know what you are doing!

Yes it is easy to spot when something is wrong. I have not set it up here (I should) but my base load is higher because of the fridge freezer. Opening the fridge shows up on my daily usage figures.
