This is idiotic beyond measure. Seriously, that someone thought of this...
http://freerice.com Basically - you answer a question, and someone in the third world gets some rice. Words fail me. |

What's wrong with it? I figured it was just a way of generating ad-income for aid charities *shrug* |

I think it's blackmail. Play our game or people won't eat. |

Could it be, in anyway, related to some other sort of crowdsourcing system like recaptcha and duolingo? |

How is that different from all the other requests from charities? Give money or, this donkey gets it. |

Most charity adverts use some kind of emotional hook to get you to part with money - the decision is yours, and the choice is pretty much binary. Yes I will, or no I won’t. This turns it into a game - so you play the game, and you only send food if you get an answer right. To me, this feels very wrong. |

I remember this being posted at the time, probably on the MUMP. Some people even had it linked in their signatures. It's free charity in return for your time. Making it a game encourages people with time to spare who may otherwise not donate. I don't see what there is to complain about ![]() |

Because it's pointless as far as I can tell. Nothing you do as a player actually gives them revenue or helps purchase said rice, it's just an arbitrary hoop to jump through before they will donate. |

All hoops are arbitrary and money has to come from somewhere. It raises awareness and raises money. Some people might also use the site to improve their basic English vocabulary. It's no different to a sponsored walk, which raises money and awareness by pointless expenditure of time with the possible marginal benefit to health. Shaking a can actually raises far more cash than pretty much any sponsored event, which are most frequently used as advertising.
If they have no visitors then there is no advertising revenue. How else should they encourage visitors? How is it harmful? Other companies do even more "selfish" things all the time like charity "reward vouchers" for spending money at the supermarket and the national lottery is absolutely sinful by comparison; encouraging gambling often amongst those that can least afford it. |
