The gov.uk website now uses Calvert and Kinnier's Transport font.

http://digital.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/201 ... ypography/

What font is that, y may ask it's the one used on every road sign. Along with Johnston, this is one of the fonts that says "home" to me. It was designed for use on roads and motorways, and is very legible. New weights have been designed for it so that it should work on a digital display.

Webfonts are really exciting, and I am really pleased to see more typefaces being used on websites. Anyway, the above article is a good read.

Yes I always enjoy reading about different fonts for some reason even though I'm not a web designer in any way, I like the fact that there's so much hidden work and thought that has gone into them, a deceptively complex process for producing sharp and well-suited tools of communication and an art form that represents aspects of human language and personality that can't be conveyed by plain text alone. :geek:

It seems like a perfectly good font, but I don't share the sense of excitement.

However I did enjoy the quote

This must be immortalized in pseud's corner.

I think that part if the excitement has been the plain fact that we can use fonts outside if the "web safe" gamut of Arial, Times, Verdana etc. that web sites have been stuck with for such a long time.they are generally dull, and make designs appear repetitive. Fonts are very much the tone of voice for any publication, and pretty much all of the web sites out there use the same fonts, and so have the same texture, feel, tone of voice.

This is changing.

There have been various false starts in this area, and it seems that over the last few years, standards have been arrived at, and browsers support them. With some CSS and a file on the server, your site can start to look as individual as you want.

I did a site revamp for a client recently, and this time we are using the same fonts as they use in their brochure and other literature. The result is a site that truly fits.

This may not seem like a big deal to some, but genuinely it is. The web will start to take on a more exciting look as more sites use custom fonts.

I'm very much the same. There seems to be an amount of magic that I'd like to understand, there are odd sounding words like kerning, and I'd just like to know more.
I'd probably categorise it with wanting to know ore about how to correctly format documents and the like. There is a lot of stuff in LaTeX that doesn't make much sense to me because I don't undersand document layout and formatting enough.

I'm just getting Arial and Times, with no CSS and all images blocked here.
