These “hamburger” menus are reminiscent of those funny drawers that used to slide out of windows in earlier versions of Mac OSX. Utterly pointless as they required more space to display, and if you were working on an app in a (what we would now regard as) limited screen space (say 1024x768 pixels or 1152x768 for wide screen users) which functions best at full screen width, these extra sliding out elements meant that you had to make the window smaller to accommodate them. They were idiotic and really needed to be palettes or more modern HUD palettes.

On iOS, there is no extra space to shove a drawer like this, so a chunk of screen real estate has to be eaten up by them, and it makes the app more clumsy to use. The BBC’s News app, FaceBook and Google+ all do this in some fashion, and I really wish they could just think of a better way.

In Chrome it's just the "options" where you can change the variables and customise Chrome, those functions have to go somewhere, and all the ones hidden away there are the options that a beginner could get away with never seeing, but they still need to be there for the power users. Of course, Apple never has that problem of power users, because they like to keep their slavish followers in a constant state of dependent neoteny.

But "works perfectly well" is JUST AN OPINION and everyone is different. You can pander to the common denominator however you want, but you will never make a perfect app to satisfy all people, the hamburger dump is, to my mind essential, non-fussy, it is made better by its ugliness, its ease, only press this if you know what you're doing.

And I know what I'm doing, so I like pressing it.
