http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-23503552 Hmmm. Why do I get the feeling we're simply being distracted here? |

I doubt that this will work. I have caller ID and get at least a five international calls a week that I now have to simply ignore. These would not be covered by this. Make the penalties severe and then you can end the problem. Too many services require you to give a phone number and then hide the check box that authorises cold calls. Make the caller ID display the country at least then you can at least block calls from countries that you are not expecting. |

I must admit I got a "CPR call blocker" plugged it in and told it to ignore IP calls and suddenly we haven't had any nuisance calls since. ![]() If the odd normal number nuisance call, calls us we simply press a button and that number is blocked in future. |

Hmm, that wouldn't work over here. 70% of new domestic lines being installed over here are IP based. |

I think the majority of calls now are IP here. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk. |

How can it tell they're "IP calls" just from the caller ID? They're indistinguishable assuming they're not sending a screwed up phone number. Most calls are routed over IP these days at some stage. |

Also a good point, IP numbers are the same as any other local number, at least over here, if they are from the normal Telcos (Telekom, Vodafone, O2, 1&1 etc.). Specialist VOIP providers, like SIPgate have their own ranges, but those bought as part of a telephone/internet bundle will have local numbers. |

We couldn't block IP calls as most rig phones are IP based these days. |

Most evil annoying people you'd want to block spoof someone else's number anyway. |

They hide behind international numbers anyway. |

They need to ban UK companies using foreign companies to call UK numbers to get round TPS rules etc. |

The problem is that many are probably scams hiding behind the name of a big well known company. I had a call from India claiming to be from Microsoft and they tried to direct me to a website that loaded malware. I just frustrated them with nonsensical answers till they hung up. I googled the website and it was a known malware scam. |

Yeah that is a bigger problem. They tried that with my father-in-law a year or so ago. Thankfully we walked in half way through the process and (literally) pulled the plug. I gave them both barrels down the phone. Didn't stop them repeatedly calling back though. This is one reason why we're exdirectory. It makes it harder for spammers and con men to get your number. Sure they could dial random numbers, but that's more hassle for them than going through a phone book. |
