The Isle of Wight bridge issue is a regular gripe/gossip topic on the island. About half of the residents are against the idea.

I know that the high cost of the ferries keeps away the day tripping lager louts, but a bridge would bring a fair amount of ecomonic stimulus to the island, so I'm torn. I'd be happier with reduced ferry fares for residents though, because Wightlink and Red Funnel are creaming it IMO. Red Funnel have a little resident button on their site, but it makes about a quid difference last I checked.

Do they still run a hovercraft ferry service to IOW?

I thought they'd retired years ago but apparently they still do.

No chance of getting the Irish to pay for any of their share. ;)

Yep, it runs between Southsea and Ryde - foot passengers only of course. It don't think it's a bad deal for the speed of the crossing - about 9 minutes iirc.

Surely an Irish sea tunnel would be more viable as it would last much longer.

They were talking about a bridge when I lived at Cowes and that was ages ago now.

Always thought a bridge Yarmouth end would make more sense as shorter route to the mainland.

Definately need to do something as the ferry fares are extortionate.

While there is no alternative they can charge what they like.

Yeah, Yarmouth to Hurst Castle spit or Lymington would be much shorter, but it'll never happen there. Schlepping through the new forest will be far from ideal, no matter how pretty it is.

Also will the NIMBY's allow the roads to be widened?
