I never press them because most at junctions they are just pedestrian pacifiers to make people think that they are in control of their environment. On simple crossing it is worth pressing for the reasons stated because it does start the lights changing procedure.

It's much safer to cross when it's clear than when someone is approaching but "should" stop. You'll never get run over by a clear road. I tend to cross when all the cars have gone but their light is still on green. I look at all the lights at the junction, not just the ones on my side. I appear to have psychic powers to some people I think.

It there are junctions involved then no it won't work. If it's a crossing and nothing else then yes it will.

I think that they do work at junctions late at night or early in the morning, basically when it will not interfere with traffic too much.

Depends. The one near my house effects the filter lights if people want to cross

At peak commuting time in Newcastle I only know of 1 that actually works any time quickly.

They do however make you look like a tourist ;)

I think during rush hours they are just for effect, if they were to actually work they would disrupt the traffic flow significantly. While it might be frustrating for someone late for work as a pedestrian it also speeds up the traffic for those late for work in their cars , as the constant stop starts is bad for fuel economy for motorists.

If you don't push the button in Orcland you don't cross the road.
