Right, my current laptop hard drive is possibly about to bite the dust long story short, so I've saved everything out to an external drive. What I now want to do is clone the laptop drive so I can keep all my progs, settings, faves etc - which program would you recommend? It's been ages since I've had to do all this and can't remember what I last used. I'm also reduced to doing it all over USB ![]() I'd really like to get this sorted while the above is still an option! |

I was looking for Windows equivalents of Super Duper. Syncback seems to be the option that comes up. Carbon Copy Cloner alternatives |

IIRC my laptop HDD came with a free utility to clone the prev HDD. Or I might've pirated partition magic. I can't remember. |

With regards to Clonezilla, what do they mean here?
http://clonezilla.org/ All I want to do is back-up the installed drive to an external via USB ![]() |

You boot from a Linux CD and it runs DD to copy the internal disk to the USB. You won't mount the disk unless you try to open it up and look at some of the files first - which you won't be doing. |

I use Acronis True Image - yeah its an old program but if I install it on a machine it gives me 30-days trial which is more time than I need. If you can't find it PM me and I'll pop you over the exe copy I have. Samsung do some sort of cloning program that they bundle with SSD's. |

Window Backup? Certainly Windows 7 version does a full image to either network or USB drive, then restores from a recovery CD. |

This, though IIRC Windows 7 will also let you do a straight-up clone complete with boot sector, so no restore disk required. Second to that would be using a Linux Live CD and a tool like GParted to clone the disk. |

Yep, I use Acronis as well. I've bought a copy for each machine here at home. |

When I was looking at replacing my laptop HDD with an SSD, I found that Crucial sold their SSD's with a data transfer kit if you wanted it. Basically cloning software and a cable so you could clone it via USB. The cost above just the price of the SSD was minimal. |

I always use Miray HDClone - it resizes accordingly and is dead easy to use. I think they do a free version now too. |

Still gonna clone it (need the laptop operational for now for contacting the cnuts at work via HR), but the real problem has been that there weren't any bloody screws holding the drive in place! The reason it was intermittent was that the caddy would slide in and out of place, connecting or disconnecting the drive ![]() |
