In just under a week, I will be returning to the UK. I will be arriving in Dover and need to get to Welwyn. So when is the easiest/best time to go around the 25?

I was thinking either 5-7am, or after 8pm? Need to plan the timings for the ferry and my 13 hours across Europe...

Nobody ever "needs" to go to Welwyn ;)

Earlier the better really or after 9am. The Heathrow section is always busy though so allow for an extra hour to account for delays just in case.

If you hit the Heathrow section going from Dover to Welwyn then I'd say you're lost

Ah well the Dartford bit is usually busy too

There's also the 50 mph speed limit around Jnc 25 at the moment which goes on for about 10 miles.

Don't forget if you go through the Dartford Crossing before 6am or after 10pm, there is no charge.

That's a couple of quid saved, at least.

Actually, if I was travelling from Dover, I'd stay on the M2/A2 and use the Blackwall Tunnel.

I'm not sure which way round you need to go, but if it's clockwise, there were roadworks causing delays last month when I was there.

And don't forget to check on the BBC's travel site before setting out: M25 updates.

Or if he's got an iPhone he can enter in his journey in maps and it will predict the travel time in current traffic.

Ok, thanks guys. Heather's tip seems prudent. I won't have internet access whilst on the trip, so can't check traffic. My Italian SIM card has now been cancelled and I won't be roaming on my UK number due to cost. That's why I'm trying to plan the likeliest easy journey in advance.

If Blackwall *IS* a viable alternative. When's the best time to hit that. Realistically, are we saying crack of dawn, or late at night? Does the same apply for the Dartford route?

Basic rule of thumb is hit the tunnels before the commuters so before 7am if you want to avoid the morning rush.

Also, keep an ear out on local radio for reports of closures. Foreign truckers often seem to get stuck in the Blackwall due to its restricted clearance.

If you're not in a hurry, there is also the Woolwich free ferry. A chance to cross the Thames by boat. :D
