'lo childs I'm in the process of writing a blog post and I'd like to get some feedback to inform the piece. I'll use the information in an anonymous way if it's useful to me. So, with that said, a few questions. In your opinion ... Is Star Wars science fiction? Is 2001 : A Space Odyssey science Fiction? Is Firefly science fiction? Is House M.D. science fiction? Is CSI science fiction? Yeah, I know there's some seemingly random ones in there, but it'll all make sense (hopefully) in the end. Mark |

Star Wars - pretty much a modern retelling of classic sagas, set in space. Science fiction. 2001 - classical fight for power, morals story set in space. Science fiction. Firefly - western soap opera set in space. Science fiction. House M.D - medical drama, loosely based in fact. Not science fiction. CSI - forensics/ police procedural drama, loosely base in fact. Not science fiction. |

Is Star Wars science fiction? - Yes Is 2001 : A Space Odyssey science Fiction? - Yes, although one hopes that humanity will at some point posses the capability to make a manned flight out to Jupiter though hopefully without a psychotic computer in tow. Is Firefly science fiction? - Yes Is House M.D. science fiction? - No, medical drama but see also CSI Is CSI science fiction? - No but some of the 'science' presented is fictional either in terms of existence or at the very least the speed at which it achieves results. I know a great deal of people with Forensic Science degrees who simply can't watch CSI because of how thoroughly it misrepresents the science of their profession. |

Same as everyone else. The last two are not science fiction because they're assumed to be based on technology we have now, but with a lot of dramatic licence. Science fiction is based on technology we might hope to have, but clearly do not have yet. |

So where does that leave William Gibson's three most recent books? Or Reamde by Neal Stephenson? Or Deep State by Walter Jon Williams? All by authors who are well established in the Science Fiction genre but who in recent years have been more interested in writing stories where the technology is very much at the cutting edge of what is already possible. |

In terms of your classic genres, I'd concur. However, it's never that simple with me. 2001 is so much more than science fiction. Firefly is as much science fiction as Buffy/Angel are "vampire fiction" and Agents of SHIELD is a comic book TV show. Whedon can't be pigeon-holed like that. Star Wars to me is light on science fiction and heavy on pure excitement. Moon is science fiction, Blade Runner is science fiction. But I look forward to reading the post either way... |

Yes : Exactly you'd say it's Space Opera, but it's definitely comes under the science fiction banner.
Yes. It's 'harder' than Star Wars but it's still sci-fi.
I'd say it verges into Space Opera as well, but it's still more scifi than any other basic genre. Although much like Star Trek, it's actually 'western in space'.
No. Regardless of one episode having a pseudo-science Macguffin in it, House is actually a procedural detective story. Just the villain is always a medical condition (or at least it was until it jumped the shark and started imagining it could live without the medical stuff). Each week House is trying to foil a murder attempt, just the murderer is usually the victim's own body, not some third party with a bottle of poison. The comparison between House and Sherlock Holmes is intentional and obvious. Essentially, I don't think it's a stretch to suggest that a man very like House, doing what House does, actually exists. It's much more of a stretch to suggest ObiWan Kenobi actually exists.
No, it's just cobblers. Having one of the characters use a bit of forensic kit that doesn't actually exist because the writers can't manage to resolve a storyline in 45 minutes without it doesn't make it Science fiction. |
