I really wish I could do this. I really need to locate that lettering brush I got in a job lot of brushes earlier this year and have a go.

It is very skilled. You could see why he might be in constant demand.

And yet in Victorian times, he may not be held in such high esteem. Every sign was hand painted, and there were a lot of such people around. Certainly more than the are now.

Very true. It is a shame that we have lost such skills in the general population.

I remember, when my grandfather passed away, we were clearing up his effects and came across a bundle of notebooks he'd kept for, well years - I think they were prewar. His handwriting was amazing. So ornate but also so consistent and regular and perfectly readable.

That takes me back, I used to do that sort of thing for a dirty little supermarket chain in the 90s, I mostly used pens though and never really used a brush a brush to do anything that small. About half the skill on display there is in the thinning of the paint.

As a I result I don't have handwriting anymore, I write block caps like a psychopath.

That and a steady hand. I am certainly seeing that the brushes are very well loaded, lubricating the brushes as they move allowing for an almost frictionless movement.

Anyho, this may be of interest to you:

The movie is on tour - but sadly nowhere near me. I’ml be hoping it’s out on BluRay or some other High Def format for me to watch (if we are very lucky, the BBC may screen it as part of the Imagine series, like the did the Helvetica movie). The lack of London based venues has annoyed a few people I know.
