In trying to get my head around politics (is it even worth bothering to try?), I used this site: http://www.politicalcompass.org/test

Apparently, I'm "Economic Left/Right: -5.62; Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.90". No idea what this means but apparently I'm close to Gandhi politically.

"Economic Left/Right: -5.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.18"

Which puts me almost exactly centre of the bottom left box.

What was interesting is how right wing the Conservatives are. Even more so than the BNP. This chart was from 2010.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

What is less surprising there is your lack of insight. This is the BNP's wonderfully meaningless economic policy:
"Accordingly, the BNP calls for the selective exclusion of foreign-made goods from British markets and the reduction of foreign imports. We will ensure that our manufactured goods are, wherever possible, produced in British factories, employing British workers.

When this is done, unemployment in this country will be brought to an end and secure, well-paid employment will flourish.

We further believe that British industry, commerce, land and other economic and natural assets belong in the final analysis to the British nation and people.
To that end the BNP will restore our economy and land to British ownership and will take active steps to break up the socially, economically and politically damaging monopolies now being established by the supermarket giants."

Most of that hasn't been Tory policy since about 1830. It's much more reminiscent of things I have read on these pages, and in fact reads something like an import from Brazil or India.
