As long as you take the reviews with a large portion of salt as there are plenty of petty grudges, bribed reviews and misinformation from small minded people on there.

Yeah, Tripadvisor and visitor-type sites do my head in. Most of the people who populate them, or write the copy are just as stupid as the vast majority of people I deal with as a rep, week in, week out. They moan about the stupidest things and wouldn't know an authentic local experience if it slapped them in the face.

I find during my seasons, that people with a brain who want to have the best time will use the internet as a base and then actually ask me (being as I live there and have at least been there for a while and explored). On very rare occasions, they even pluck up the courage to learn some basic Spanish/Italian and talk to locals.

IMO, (the right) people will always trump the internet. I made a business out of this fact last winter and I try to apply the same principles myself when researching.

To be fair every place I've been to that has had good reviews on there has been great so I've no complaints.

Perhaps okenobi and I see the worse side of it as we've both worked in tourism/hospitality areas. However I've seen several instances of bribery involving free goods and services for favourable reviews, relationship breakdowns leading to negative reviews and the best one; people writing reviews on a business whose services they didn't even use, by mistake.

I think it is possible to sort wheat from chaff on that site but it has one other thing that annoys me to the point that I'll not return, and that would be bloody pop-unders asking if I want to review something or the other.

I usually go the Derbyshire/Peak District every Christmas with a group of friends and rent a cottage for the week. Plenty of good walks if the weather stays dry - try any of the old railway tracks like the Tissington Trail. Or along the River Bradford around Youlgrave. Go up onto Stanton Moor and see the Nine Ladies Stone circle and then go for a pint and food at The Red Lion in Birchover. Finally if the weather is too inclement there's always Buxton.

My favourite place. Epic childhood days there with the family, dog and some picnics.
If you walk up to the rocks from the wooden bridge, the views are 360 degree epic.
When we take my boys it will be at least the forth generation to go there. My grandad liked it so much we scattered his ashes there.

It is true the bastards have put double yellow lines on the B6521 now? That'll make parking more of a bitch.
