I imagine the are a few you have locally. Here's one near where I live. That's a 30cm ruler in there. The pothole has been reported to Essex CC.

Solid concrete beneath the tarmac? Not much to complain about if that is the case.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

It depends more on the depth, if it is shallow then it is not so bad. If deep then it can unseat a cyclist or damage a vehicle.

It's about 8cm deep. You don't want to drive a car over it, let alone ride a bike over it.

Actually Derby City Council are really good at fixing pot holes each spring.

That is probably as good as you could ask, no point if they get damaged over winter, plus budgets might need to be used up. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

That entire road is really in need of resurfacing. It's got cracks running across the road, which open up and form holes. It's got to the point where they are patching the patches, and some of those mends are slowly sinking into themselves.
I doubt this massive hole will be fixed before the prong now. mind you, they could rename it the Chelmsford Velodrome and get the TdF to do a few laps.....

Is that road a main road in which case responsibility might actually rest with the department for transport, and not the council.

Councils are responsible for their own roads maintenance budgets.

Not all roads. Some are the responsibility of the Department of Transport but there may be a mechanism for the local council to maintain them once there is an accident.

The Highways Agency is responsible for the motorway and trunk road network. All other roads are under the county or unitary authority. That's in England. Of course, in Scotland and Wales (and presumably Northern Ireland) it's slightly different.

Thanks for that, I was not sure which department or agency took over from the DoT.
