Tesco Value has been shelved. Its blue and white stripes have passed their sell-by date. The bargain brand has checked out.

Instead the 20-year-old range is being replaced by a younger, brighter model with only a slightly different name, Everyday Value.

Bosses say the "no frills" facelift is a step up in quality - none of the products will contain MSG, hydrogenated fats, artificial flavours or colours, or genetically modified ingredients - at no extra cost.

That last bit sounds a little tricky to pull off in some instances :?

I found that some of the value items were actually very good. The ketchup is fine as is the butter. It will only be a rebranding of the own brand range. Not like it is gone for good.

Just shows you how often I'm in Tesco. The story was in the Beeb's sidebar bit. I should have known better; it's not the first time an old story has come round seemingly for no reason, though I seem to recall Asda or someone challenging how Tesco advertised, so maybe that's it...

I go in to my local Tesco Express but there are almost no value items in store, so would never know. As for the big shops they are done online via mysupermarket so it is not so noticeable when you are comparing dozens of products.
