Good evening all - some good news to (finally) share... work are planning on sending me to Australia to work for 6 months on our projects out there! :D

The thing is, being forever pecimistic, I have held back on my enthusiasm so far to maintain some degree of control over the whole affair - and have these last couple of days decided the best way to approach a number of questions I have (for which answers have yet to be volunteered) with a letter and a formal meeting with my director - with whom I have a fairly amicable relationship with.

And so I thought, what better a sounding board and resource for suggestions on how to approach than here! ;) So if you'd all have a looksee - maybe I'm missing some things, or if I'm asking too much / not asking hard enough.....

RE: Australian work placement

Dear *******

Following our most recent conversation on Tuesday relating to me spending time in Australia to work both on **** and as a BIM instructor for ********, I thought it best (in addition to requesting a meeting) to list here a number of questions I have:

Dates
When is it planned for me to leave?
I would like to see my family and will need to make arrangements regarding my flat & my bills

When will I be returning? Is it a fixed or flexible term?
Should I wish to append annual leave to the end of my time in Australia – would MAAP consider a two-leg “broken return” flight if the cost is equivalent, or supplemented by me?

Accommodation
What type of accommodation is being arranged?
What (beyond the obvious) will I need to take with me?

Travelling
Obviously this is dependent on the location of my accommodation, but in the case of having to use public transport to get to the SPA offices / site, will these costs be covered?

Would an alternative option be considered to allow for the purchase (or long-term hire) of a bicycle be preferentially cheaper over innumerable bus trips? If so, how much?

I assume all other times I am required to travel on work related business will be covered in the usual manner? I of course fully appreciate recreational travelling will be at my own cost.

Expenses
What allowances will be considered towards a dining budget?

Will I be issued with a company card?

How will expenses (including those for travel) be administered?

Annual Leave
I assume accruement and receipt of annual leave will remain as normal?
My birthday at the end of November coincides with friends being in Sydney – time I will be requesting off.

Medical
Obviously I will be relinquishing the luxury of the NHS whilst in Australia; in addition to my personal health & accident care plan (which is not covered internationally) as such what provisions will be made to adequately offset this should I need medical advice, aid and/or care?

Emergencies
Should for whatever reason I need to return home (for instance family emergencies) during the period, and returning to resume work is viable, will such costs be covered by MAAP?

Pay
How will my wages be paid? As normal? Do I need to do, or provide, anything?

Will working abroad work affect my PAYE contributions and other deductions?

Further to these questions; it has not escaped my attention that I will be serving additional roles above and beyond my typical duties whilst in Australia; operating as an Architectural Assistant, project BIM manager and a BIM tutor – whilst being the MAAP representative in Australia. For this, I wonder, can I expect to see some level wage increase?

Since you are leaving for Australia quite soon yourself, I would these be answered with some degree of urgency, although I appreciate a number of my questions require more consideration than others.

Thanks

Any comments will be greatly welcomed... Cheers!

Congrats on the news.

My uncle went from England -> Switzerland -> Australia. He likes the last one the most.

Just enjoy yourself while you are there. You only live once.

 It has crossed my mind.

But since this will act as an agenda for our meeting, I though best if I didn't throw all my toys out of my pram in the first instance and not get the answers I want - because raise or not - I'm still quite keen on going.

Oh, I think you'll really enjoy Australia.
It's got all the problems the UK has, and they're not nearly as tolerant as we are.
Good luck.

That's correct Bratty, because we each get a surname granted to us depending on what will happen in our lives, look at Wordsworth.

Good news! I think six months is pretty perfect!! If you don't like it from the start (for whatever reason) as happened to me in New Zealand then it's not too long a time to just make the most of knowing you can head home soon.

As for all the surname stuff, mine is Jennings. What does that mean?? I went to primary school with a lad called hoare. I was too young to know what it meant but I saw his name in the photo recently and I gol'd (giggled out loud ;) )

I'd leave the pay increase until the end, not because of the pram thing, but to keep it low profile. You want to show enthusiasm for the job and not come across as just money grubbing...

I think you'll love it. I certainly liked working abroad so much, I stayed. :D
