I was on Mersea Island again thus weekend. Normally, the sea there is quite choppy - there usually are waves and breakers on the shore.

Thus weekend it was very, very different. There was no wind, and it was very misty and hazy. The sea was practically still no waves - just the odd ripple. You could see that the tide was coming in not from the advances of waves, but just the the water was creeping slowly towards you.

As I said, no wind. Sailing boats were becalmed.

Some pictures.

Very hazy, and just the smallest of ripples on the surface of the water.

Pretty much no horizon when looking out to sea.

I was odd, and a bit spooky.

Not much seems to wash up there. We did find a bit of a clay pipe, and what we think is a coprolite.

There are a few old gun emplacements and pillboxes around. One's been turned into a cafe of sorts.

Along similar lines, I've been up in Scotland in the week. I took the ferry from Oban on the coast to the Isle of Mull and this is what the water looked like on the way over. I think it was technically the Irish sea.

Last time I sailed around Oban and Mull we sailed our towards Rum und Eigg, but the wind was so strong and the waves so heftig, that we sought sanctuary in the harbour it Muck.
