Er, no, not likely. I don't even watch sport and I could name you any number of popular black competitors.

I'd say a major fact is most of the races aren't live on terrestrial TV any more. If it's a sport people only see about once month nobody doing it is going to be that popular.

Over here it is because he isn't Nico Rosberg...

F1 is on terrestrial TV over here, although I think I've watched maybe 2 minutes of F1 this year.

His lack of popularity could be because he acts like a blingy little chav.

However, I supported him because he's a) British and b) one of the best drivers I've seen.

"hey I'm world champion, that's the best thing ever". Perhaps because he has the emotions of a cyborg imitating human behaviour.

He competes with Froome and Murray in my eyes.

Here's the thing : generally very highly strung emotional people don't get to be F1 world champions. To win at a massively technical sport where the margin between victory and defeat is sometimes fractions of a second requires an analytical personality not an emotional one.

True, but that is justification for being the way he is. It doesn't mean that he's any more likeable because he has a "reason" not to be emotional etc...

I would like him more if he actually lived in Britain and paid taxes like the rest of us instead of living in tax exile thus avoiding tax, whilst at the same time "claiming" to be British.

Well he's just won Sports Personality Of The Year, so he can't be that unpopular.

EDIT

Doh! Didn't notice jonbwfc had beat me to it.

Not many voted then - about 600,000 out of a population of 60+ million.

So that about 1% of the population. That's not bad to a TV phone in of no real importance.
