Are there really people who think that the universe is 6,000 years old and was created in 7 days and so on...

Been watching the Bill Nye / Ken Ham debate and I'm still not convinced that they're not just having a laugh.

Are people seriously so stupid? (It might be insulting to call them stupid but there really is no other word that will do).

Oh yes. There's a creationist farm near Bristol.

At heart, it stems from having a view-point you want to justify (generally it's only those that take a completely literal interpretation of the Bible), rather than a desire to understand how the universe actually works.

Creationists are the biggest deniers of observation I can think of.

Depends on what you mean by creationism. It's basically the creation of the universe by a deity.

Christians believe the world was created in six days. Elsewhere I recall the (hebrew?) word for "day" and "age" (or era) was the same. So could have been six eras, which probably makes more sense.

If you look at say Hinduism, they believe the universe was created from a big bang, and has happened multiple times. One of my Sikh friends says there are multiple 'verses in the same way you get bubbles with soap (each bubble representing a universe). Muslims appear to believe in evolution. Buddhists believe in evolution and the multiple cycles of the universe.

There are counties and states in America, where Creationism is taught in schools as a science and evolution is a heretical belief that is illegal and cannot be discussed, let alone taught in school.

Ahh, Ken Ham. He's great. Ray Comfort is equally as stupid.

You'd swear it was a comedy sketch if a) you've not seen his other stuff and b) he hadn't since claimed it was a badly made argument

Public school boards in some localities have favoured creationism, but they have no power to ban the teaching of evolution.

In a discussion about "us" being more truthful and rational than "them" we ought not to exceed the facts ourselves.

Then the reports I heard were inaccurate. They reported bans on teaching Darwinism.

Edit: Kansas and Dover both banned Darwinism during the last decade, but both were overturned on appeal.

Some do, some don’t. The majority that do are fundamentalists or “born again” - the lot who basically came from the Puritans. They take a literal reading of the Bible, and believe that what’s in it is 100% rue - even the bits that contradict others. There are other Christians - mostly CofE and Catholics - who take a differing view - not everything in the Bible is a 100% accurate transcript of what happens, it’s a series of stories, parables and analogies. The world didn’t take literally six days to make, but it’s way of expressing a period of time. What’s a day to a God anyway? Who knows what a deity has as a timescale? It’s more likely that it’s a good excuse to say that after six days of hard work you’ve earned a rest.

I went to a private catholic school and we never were taught that the world was created in 6 days, it's always been seen as a parable.
From what I understand, some Muslims also believe in creationism?

That would be a great joke, if any of that stuff was actually part of the Horus mythology.
