Why do they make it an Apple / iTunes story? There was a change in European law, that all distance selling, including electronic sales online are subject to a 14 day cooling off period.

Firstly because Apple is better copy than other online retailers.

Second because Apple appear to actually be going further than the EU regulations actually require and the consequences of what they're apparently doing has knock on implications for both sellers and also third parties not directly involved in transactions (the Official Charts company in the example given at the end of the article).

Until we actually see how many people are going to take advantage of this 'loophole' it's hard to say what it's effect may be. People rent films because most films you want to watch once. I don't think there are many songs I've been interested enough to want to get a copy of but not want to keep. There are also plenty of ways to get songs if you don't want to pay for them - from the obvious illegal ways to official youtube videos or whatever. Buying it from iTunes then requesting your money back seems more of a faff than any of those.

Yes, maybe people will decide they don't want a song then ask for a refund but I don't think it's going to be widespread. I can possibly see it happening with apps more; there are plenty of apps that have a two week or so lifespan - from apps you get to use on holiday for example and, franky, most mobile games - where getting your cash back would be attractive.

Obvious question : Does it apply to in-app purchases as well? If you've bought a bunch of Crystal Castles gold coins or whatever, will you be able to get them back?
