Actually, we don't know. The supercomputer designed to figure out the question that 42 was the answer to was destroyed by the vogons shortly before it's program was to be completed.

Technically, we know the answer to the ultimate question is 42, but we've never really understood what the question was. The Earth was destroyed by the Vogons while it was computing the ultimate question!
