Two items: cost and duration; I don't see why there's a $50k limit on fundraising, and why limit the episodes to 30 mins max?

Well, I'm pretty sure Axenar breaks several of those rules, and that was just the 'Prelude'.

In "am-dram Trek" there are a few that are running as ongoing series. These tend to run a whole hour, and they look pretty expensive to make.

There is a new Trek series on the way. They clearly don't want to have their new baby's branding compromised.

So they can claim the be supporting fan films but at the same time ensuring that any that are made within the guidelines will be total sh!te. And so they can cheerfully sue the pants of anyone who looks like they might make something good.

Still wonder why people who have that much skill and talent can’t just do something new and original.

Opinion: Guess What? Fan-works Help Your Brand
http://sciencefiction.com/2016/06/27/gu ... our-brand/

Series' that gained a (potential) shot in the arm after fan films? Punisher, Predator, Thundercats, Aliens, Batman... You're an ignorant idiot if you think they're hurting your brand because everyone knows it's a fan film. If it's good you've got free publicity on every movie site going, if it's bad nobody gives a crap because everyone knows it's a fan film.

Oh Nooooo! George Takei Thinks Making Sulu Gay In 'Star Trek Beyond' Is "Unfortunate"
http://sciencefiction.com/2016/07/07/oh ... fortunate/

Hollywood and it's corporation associates really are cackhanded about getting with the times. It'll be a tiny, inconsequential scene likely, but I agree with George on this purely because it's all a bit desperate.

Indeed, this doesn't make a huge amount of sense.
There's also now an easy way they could introduce a new character although probably not until the next film. They're sadly going to have to replace Checkov. I wonder if they'll just drop in a new actor to keep the character or introduce a new one.

You know, I love the design of the alien with the lines on her face and the staff but other than that there is nothing at all about the film that appeals to me.

So far I haven't seen a trailer that suggested a plot.
