Yeah, because everyone wants Star Trek to be 'raw and gritty' rather than, you know, fun.

Raw and gritty is industry code for we know it's a steaming turd, usually. Make everything moody to distract from the stench.

Star Trek has always been at the bubblegum-piulp end of sci-fi - it works best there. When they start getting too serious, it gets silly and, sadly, unbelievable.

Michael Dorn turned down a role in ST:D because they wouldn't pay him nearly enough.
So he was offered what, $6,500? I wonder what that is compared to the rest of the cast that's currently in the show.

There isn't a good bit of news to be had from that show, is there?

Is it a 'This'll let us hold on to the rights' thing? A tax write-off? You have to wonder...

Whatever happened to their plans for their own version of Netflix? Maybe if they're in the gutter they stopped giving a crap about STD (lmao)?

I had to shorten the URL because of a sweary word, but basically the linked article (on io9) is a good summation of the situation as it is right now.

Yup, hard to argue with any of that.
Taken in conjunction with CBS's new rules for fan films as a result of the Axenar fiasco and they really aren't doing a lot to endear themselves to fans right now are they.

I can’t help thinking that Seth McFarlane should have been given the Star Trek gig.

Quote:
NASA introduced a new group of astronauts last week, and on the flight suits they sported a Flight Operations emblem that Michael Okuda -- the longtime lead graphic designer for Star Trek -- designed for the Johnson Space Center. It's the latest descendent of the original Mission Control/Mission Operations emblem created by Gene Kranz and Robert McCall.

Just watched the latest trailer for Discovery. Urgh, I'm not impressed.
I know timeline continuity has never been particularly strong in Star Trek but talk about pissing on yer chips.
This really feels like they created a new action Sci-fi show and just grabbed for the nearest branding they could find and slapped it on there.

It really would have been better if they'd picked up Axenar, at least that made a stab at trying to be consistent with the TOS era.
