Timing FAIL, amongst others. http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-31786562 I mean ignoring the fact they did it in the first place... no, let's make it worse with our 'apology'. |

I however would be much happier having an 'international people day', when we think about how we generally treat the poor and unfortunate around the world, without having to make spurious gender-based distinctions. |

That's a very good thing, but it's not exactly what I'm talking about. There are many, many people in the world who are not oppressed, who do not have their human rights infringed, but who.. have not gained much from the advancements that the developed world takes for granted. Clean water and good sanitation, predictable power supplies, that kind of thing. They have the minimum for life but not the minimum for a fulfilling life. If there is someone in the world who is unable to thrive because they must spend all their time surviving, whether that person is male or female is surely irrelevant. The world needs to be a better place. Full stop. Saying 'better for 'group X'' can only ever be divisive. We are simply 'people'. |

A fine point, indeed, but perhaps we should start with those who's human rights aren't being met first (such as clean water and sanitation), then worry about who has telephones and copies of Wallpaper later? Fundamentally, there isn't enough resources on the planet for everyone to enjoy our lifestyle. There's not even enough copper. This is currently an insurmountable problem. However, nailing down the basics of Human Rights - even just points 25 and 26 would be a good start - might improve people's lot. |
