Here's a map showing how much of the eclipse people in the UK will see and when.  Only 85% here but that's pretty good. I got some reasonable photos during the last one back in 1999. The BBC are warning people about taking selfies and blinding themselves.

I remember being told by my father that an eclipse is a once in a lifetime event, this is the fourth one I can remember.

Aug 11th 1999, we were on our Honeymoon. We fell victim to the massive passport office snafu in 99 and ended up cancelling our trip to the Canary Islands. It worked out well in the end, because we had a lovely time in Devon and Cornwall and were down in Torbay for the eclipse. There was a fair bit of cloud cover, but we managed to see it, and all the seabirds went frikkin crazy during the totality.

Last time, I was here. I took a picture with my first digital camera.  Eclipse by hairydalek, on Flickr I remember a previous one, must have been in the 1970s, when my granddad got some toughened glass from his shed and used a candle to smoke it so I could see it. I know that’s not the done thing now, but back then...

I tweeted Dara O'Briaiaiaiain before his stargazing programme yesterday, asking him to ask the so called experts on the programme why we never get solar eclipses at night. We do get lunar eclipses, when the Earth’s shadow passes over the face of the Moon. Those happen at night. Mostly.

MMmmmm. Questions I fielded today from 17 year olds: 1. Why does it happen? 2. How did we know it will happen? (Ok, that's a good line of enquiry) 3. Will it last all day? 4. How will I know it's happening? We're setting up a video camera in the morning to live stream the eclipse around site.
