We have gone through a redundancy process at work and I had to reapply for my job. I was one of the extremely lucky ones and even got a promotion out of it.
So on one hand I have the recognition of my technical skills and knowledge tempered by the fact some of my colleagues and friends are leaving.
How to feel happy and sad at the same time!

Similar thing here. Major re-org and several good people are fed up with it and have decided to 'pursue other opportunities'. Happy for them but sad to see them go.

Redundancies are just generally horrible for eveyone concened.
It's almost impossible for people not to take it personally, especially if they've had long service as I know from personal experience.

Still, congratualtions on the promotion bobbdobbs.

Congratulations. I had to sit as a safe employee through the 2010 redundancies in the construction industry, I'm still horrified at the number of great people who had to go :( in the end all of them found a great job to go to though.

Thanks guys n gals. Still trying to get my head around it all. The person I thought would be an absolute shoe in for my line manager is going and being replaced by someone else. I have to work with him for 2 months before he goes. It's going to be very hard.

People say moving house is the most stressful thing you'll ever do.

Bollocks!

Being made redundant is.
Your happiness should be greater than your sadness. You can still be friends after all.

We had a round of redundancies just over a year ago. I can't really give you much advice because it was, frankly, weird.

You'll just have grin and bear it tbh :(

Agreed

Things I've done that are easy:

  • Move house
  • Learn another language
  • Arrange a wedding
  • Teach a classroom of children
  • Sing in front of 1000 people

Things I've done that are hard:

  • Get made redundant
  • Stay married (so far ;) )
  • Do all the crap that a teacher has to put up with
  • Perform CPR on your own dad
  • Get shot at
  • Get out of Rwanda when you're on their watch list
  • Have a nervous breakdown

I've never understood that - I've moved house three times and never felt stressed. I think the stress must come from poor organisation.

Or perhaps the people who say that have never been made redundant. Now, having to move house because of lack of income due to redundancy... yes, that could be a difficult time - but redundancy is often outside of your control.

Stress is a phantom, conjured by people who just cannot cope. ;)
