Better than forcing people is to give alternatives to ballot voting as well as the option of "no vote".

Plenty of places have mandatory voting. They generally do have a 'none of the above' option when doing so.

If the matter is dealt with in court and you are found guilty, you may be fined up to $170 plus court costs and a criminal conviction may be recorded against you.

If it was compulsory then they parties might have more balanced manifestos as they would not all be pandering to the Gray voters (who do vote)

Yeah, they have mandatory voting in Australia but you can still spoil your card/vote for none which is what I do in the elections anyway.

Edit: This still counts as a vote, whether voting is mandatory or not, but means you didn't want to pick any of the options available to you.
