There was thing on the radio yesterday (because they couldn't talk about the election so they were filling all the time) about a woman in her 90's who had flown spitfires during the war as a member of the auxiliary - they basically 'delivered' planes by flying them from the factories to the RAF airfields. They took her up in one again. Her interview afterwards was quite something.

Women played a massive part in the war too and that is generally forgotten.

The RAF Auxiliary were well known and there's the whole 'land girls' thing that's been done quite a lot.I think in general the things women did during the war weren't as 'cinematic' - at least not compared to fighting on the front line - so they've been less represented in the mainstream media but anyone who actually knows the history of WWII knows that is was a collective effort on everyone's part.

Can you even begin to imagine how [LIFTED] up the world would be now if the Nazis had won?
It doesn't bear thinking about.

There were a few of series about the "Land Girls" as I was growing up, there was a children's documentary as part of "The Way We Were", an adult documentary and a romantic series for adults.

The WAAFs were also very well known and covered in history lessons, as an airplane buff growing up, I couldn't not learn about WW2 aircraft without knowing about the WAAF.

And don't forget the Wrens or WRNS:
BBC wrote:
WRNS Boat Crews served the British and American Fleets, delivering stores, dispatches and signals, and ferrying Commanding Officers (COs) ashore for sailing orders. Some WRNS Coxswains were trained to serve as pilots for D-Day, taking the smaller ships on their way and towing disabled vessels back into port for repairs, frequently carried out by WRNS Mechanics.

They also did a lot of other important stuff, both clerical and communications, as well as mechanics, supplies officers etc.

The same with the WAACs, later Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service, which later became the Women's Royal Army. Each service had their women's auxiliary. And don't forget the FANYs and QAIMNS.

I hope I've covered all of the ones I learnt about when I was at school, (oh, don't forget the SOE and SIS operatives).

whoever you served with regardless of nationality may you RIP ...

from WW1 ...

Quote:
“Those heroes that shed their blood
And lost their lives.

You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.

Therefore, rest in peace.

There is no difference between the Johnnies

And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side

Here in this country of ours,

You, the mothers,

Who sent their sons from far away countries

Wipe away your tears,

Your sons are now lying in our bosom

And are in peace

After having lost their lives on this land they have

Become our sons as well”.
