The Frenchun's post about Lenny Kravitz's daughter reminded me that the first single I ever bought was Fly Away by Lenny Kravitz. Up until that point, I'd been content with taping songs from the Top 40 radio chart show on Sundays. This was the first song that I really wanted to buy and coincided with being in sixth form and hence more independent and with a little money.

What was the first single you ever bought?

I believe that the only single I ever bought was the painfully [LIFTED] "Take a Look Around" by Limp Bizkit, bought on the back of it being the theme tune to Mission Impossible 2.

Well we weren't rich. I used to save up my pocket money. Think they were about 50p when I started seriously collecting so I'd buy one every other week.

Anyway you could record it from the radio for free :)

You had pocket money when you were 5?!?
I honestly do not know the first 7" I bought myself with my own money.
I do recall having The Land of Makebelieve bought for me.
The very first LP I bought myself was A Kind of Magic by Queen.

The first single I bought was "Hellraiser" by The Sweet in 1973. IIRC it cost 45p from the record department in Boots.

The question, as presented in the OP, was the first single you ever bought.
Don't make me come over there and slap you.

TBH if you were a teenager in the early 70s with any kind of interest in popular music it would have been very difficult to make a poor choice when buying singles. My next two purchases were "Can The Can" by Suzi Quattro and "Seven Seas Of Rhye" by Queen. My first Album purchase was "The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars" by David Bowie. That came from the "serious" record shop in town which didn't sell frivolities like singles and cost all of £2.18, approximately 20p cheaper than buying it from Boots or WH Smiths.

I've just realised that I've never bought a single of any kind

Weird - I suppose I was too busy making music to bother buying other people's in installments.
