Future of human gene editing to be decided at landmark summit | Science | The Guardian http://www.theguardian.com/science/2015 ... spr-embyosYou'd think that would be getting more press... Anyway, I'm all for it so long as there's strict laws in place. But I figure it'll all require a lot more testing either way Any objections to it? Thoughts?

Personally I am in favour of it - eradicating genetic diseases is a "good thing"
I have no issues with the "designer babies" either - if I was a parent and could give my kids a head start (smarter, improved immune system etc) then I would do so

I suppose the whole 'designer baby' thing is tied up with the notion of 'fairness'. That fiddling with genes to make your child stronger or more intelligent is unfair on those who can't afford to do that with their child. But the bare fact is this situation is not fair anyway. A child born of rich parents will probably do better anyway, because it will have better resources and nutrition as it develops. You can't make it a 'level playing field' anyway.

Unforeseeable consequences? Until you have made a super-baby with extra strength and smarts, you don't know wtf you are getting yourself into. You may be creating the most perfectly able psychopath there have ever been.
It's quite a complex machine to tinker with.

There's also the important consideration which is that we could, inadvertently or otherwise, create humans that exist in unspeakable agony or mental anguish before we figure out what's going on.
We're not nearly as good at this as we like to think we are.

Or humans that are incredibly mentally unstable? There's an episode of Xfiles about that topic

Once you have established the parameters of the ideal offspring, and the technology to create such (without unexpected howling psychos). Do you then allow people to continue to take their chances with nature?
Or do you have the right (or the duty) to impose disease resistant, tall, unblemished offspring with the correct set of intellectual characteristics for the betterment of the nation?

And what happens to the perfectly designed kids who come out imperfect? Perfect genes does not mean perfect birth

If only there was some sort of film (or films) about all these questions
