Brilliant article. But there's so much wrong as consequences of the platform itself. Mobile Amazon tries to cram in all the things that made Amazon a site worth visiting in the first place, but inevitably fails. Same for eBay as a comparison. As a result, both their apps handle like turds too. And they aren't the only ones.

I'm curious about Safari though. I've never seen an Android browser that didn't crash given an advert. Hell, they'll crash just because it's a Monday, but is Safari as bad as he implies? I'd hoped Apple would have been more on top of that crap since they led the way with flash, not that it's totally their responsibility. I only say it at all because clearly some browsers are much better at handling these things than others.

What I find more likely to kill my browsing experience is all my apps deciding to dial out at once - no process-killer seems capable of stopping this, and I'm not even using the fcuking things while they're sapping memory :x

Anyway, what's your take on the mobile web? Got a phone it just seems to work on?

ROFL, then don't stick so many images, adverts and other crud onto the page... KISS.

I rarely bother looking at the web on my phone, only if I am out and about and need information straight away. I normally wait until I am at my PC or on my combi-device (Surface Pro 3), before I surf the web.

What do you do with your devices? FF doesn't work properly on your desktop, with Amazon, and now the browser on your Android devices crash regularly? I haven't experienced Chrome on Android crashing, same for IE on Windows Phone and Safari on iOS - they have generally been very stable - although I haven't used iOS for a couple of years now, so it might have changed. But there again, I'm not a heavy user of mobile web browsers, but when I do use them I've never experienced crashes.

FF is now fine that I've kinda solved the Amazon problem and have a computer with 8Gb of memory! It's no secret that the thing has become ridiculously bloated. It's still the best browser out there though, currently.

You really couldn't have been browsing too long on an Android phone if it hasn't crashed! The stock browser isn't always Chrome to my knowledge, but that's a POS anyway. A lot of people tend to use Boat or Dolphin, which aren't as bad or resource hungry. Problems tend to occur when an Android phone decides it wants to connect to the store IME

Can't say I've had a problem with Dolphin

I've been meaning to test it, it's downloaded and everything!

Firefox ran well enough on my 2GB Windows tablet with Atom processor. About a year ago they made it a lot lighter and got rid of the memory leaks. Chrome is now the boat monster.

Barring Safari being a terrible browser in general (which is another rant entirely) I don't either on Android

From Twitter user @mhoye:

"It takes 87 requests and 7MB of data transfer to read The Verge's 1600-word article on why the mobile web sucks. High fives all 'round."

A browser that synchs all your bookmarks over all devices is terrible? Yep totes! :P

Chrome and Firefox have done that for ages :)

It's more the technical side of things, the inability to use a proper WebDB, the issues in certain CSS styles that should be compatible and the experience is mediocre at best

I had another article I read recently but don't think I saved it
