It nearly has to be a classic and cheap before I'll even consider buying a standard Blu-Ray! The visual jump over DVD just isn't great enough, your average film just isn't worth buying full stop, and BRs are laughably expensive. And now they want you to buy another player? Fcuk off.

Yes, yes it is worth it over a DVD.
There are poor transfers out there - BSG, buffy, for instance - but on a good copy it's superb. The future is 4k, regardless, and what's more than that, HDR video is a thing that could well be coming eventually. And you really will need a new display for that.

TBH, I think I'll wait for 4K until there's a viable digital distribution medium. Disks? in 2015? really?

For 4K (or UltraHD to be pedantic) I think it's reasonable.
For 1080p/i? Pointless.

Reliable ISPs? In 2015? ;)

I am still using a 720 TV, so 4k can do-one as far as I'm concerned (at least for the time being).

I'm 1080p but on a 37 inch screen...

I have to confess to really not liking 4K screens.

I find they sit right in the bottom of uncanny valley

Surely it's the next logical upgrade? Why would you bother going to 1080?

I wouldn't have a clue what to do if my TV suddenly croaks it! (8+0
I suspect I'd go for the best sort of screen I could comfortably afford, but I'd have to do some research beforehand; which brand, what size, what features ... blah blah blah.
My current TV is a Sony Bravia and it's been brilliant so I'd certainly look at buying Sony again.

To my eyes, the gap between 720 and 1080 is next to nothing.
576 to 1080 definitely is. Just go from channel 1 to channel 101 on a Freeview HD box with an HD screen and you can absolutely see it.

Have you seen much 4K stuff on them, or just upscaled 1080? You'll love HDR video when/if that rolls around then.

I have done this - though mainly with ch4-ch104.
Without any doubt Ch104 image quality is far superior to the standard broadcast channel.
I suspect that when the TV upgrade time does come, I'll look long and hard at 4k screens.

I didn't go to HD until 2010, so I'll probably be looking for the next step in another 5 years or so.

I very much love discs. Of both the audio and video variety.

Great if you have a (quasi) permanent home and the hardware to play them. I used to have all of that. Since I became nomadic, I sold it all and now my software sits in plastic crates at my parents house.

But here's a thought just as I have it....

How many trips to the cinema would the cost of a 4K display, BD player and a years worth of software afford you? Quiet a few I imagine...

I have to admit, I used to be a disc fan. I have over 1300 DVDs and a dozen or so BDs, but I haven't bought more than about 3 or 4 discs in the last 5 years. Music is even longer, the last CD I bought was a The Cure boxed set, which must have been 2004 / 2005.

I used to watch a lot of DVDs, but in the last few years, I've watched mainly TV and that, very little. I probably "watch" about 3 hours of TV a week - as opposed to being in the same room as my wife watching her soaps. I've contemplated bunging the discs on eBay a couple of times.
