When it was released in 1979, the film was given an 'X' certificate in line with other horror films of the time.

But it was not just the gory scenes of the extra terrestrial beast stalking and killing the terrified crew of the spaceship Nostromo which earned it the "adults only" rating.

Also of great concern was "sexual imagery" which, it was thought, would be too much for teenage minds.

An interesting one, this. I always thought it would have been the chest burster scene and the other violence meted out by the creature, but apparently not.

That's somebody who gave it a lot of thought! I mean it's widely accepted today as semi-sexual, but back then...

I don't think the average teenager would have made the connection. Maybe the censor was familiar with Giger's art lol.

I would imagine a lot of teenagers at the time were too. By the time I saw Alien (ITV screened it, so I watched it), quite a lot of us at school knew of his work.

I think it might possibly be less about HR Giger's psychosexual subtexts and more about Sigourney Weaver in her underwear.

She did audition in a pair of hooker boots according to the DVD extras.

'Listen, love, I don't know what you've been told about 'the big chap', but...'
