If cinemas lowered their prices they'd have no problem getting people through the doors, sh1te films or not. The real money is in the snacks anyway, apparently.

But truth be told, even daytime screenings always have a reasonable amount of people any time I've gone. That's true whether it's capes and tights or pish like Gone Girl.

People using mobile phones during the film need to piss off and die though...

I go to the cinema once a year if that and don't particularly like cinemas.

Nolan can say what he wants and it will have zero impact on me

I'd like to some actual evidence from a studio that they believe storytelling trumps everything. A lot seem to think that bigger explosions or some such can certainly substitute for storytelling and that nobody will notice.

The problem with the cinema is the price.
I appreciate that running large sites cost a lot of money but all that happens is the prices go up and up and up and stuff doesn't get any better for most of the time. Most of the staff don't really seem to want to be there, you can't beat that sticky floor feeling and if you want a seat that you can actually sit comfortably in for 2 hours that'll be an extra £1.70 as well than you very much.

My local showcase has been doing a massive refurbishment is (electric) relining leather chairs - they are really comfortable and a good size

I'd be more content if Nolan would keep his teeth together and stop making flash, samey, predictable films. The eye candy soon wears thin if you've figured out the twist and started cataloguing the plot holes before the the halfway mark.

I didn't mind his films at all until TDKR. That seems to be when he followed formerly good directors into, 'This'll make money then they'll give me all the toys' valley.

Quality of movies and also behaviour of people in the cinema. These days people have to check their phones, go for 2 piss trips in 2 hrs of movie, talk loudly to their mates. I don't get why people spend £10 not to watch the movie and ruin it for everyone else!

Can I add Sticky Floors to the list? Cinemas aren‘t really centres of culture now. They seem more like sausage factories hell bend on shifting audiences through the block busters as quickly as possible.

Apart from the idiot laughing ironically in certain parts of the film, my best cinema experience was seeing 2OO1: A Space Odyssey (note correct typography in the title, I thank you) at the BFI last December.

• Good film
• Decent selection of bars and food
• Staff who seemed to give a damn about films, as well as notes handed out to all about the film
• No trailers or adverts
• Good sound
• Good picture quality (the film has recently been restored)
• People were there to see the film, so were on good behaviour (see exception above - there’s always one).

So Nolan is right then?

If everything is crap, cinemas must indeed drastically improve. Caz, would anything convince you to go?

I recently went to see Sicario. The people I went with were underwhelmed. It was one of the best films I've seen in a long time. Perhaps I'm more willing to be taken in by the magic of cinema than others...?

I think that this is the point right here. In order to succeed, the cinema needs to add a certain something that a telly can't muster.

I think the thing that ruins it for me is that going to a multiplex feels so ... bog-standard. The experience of going to the cinema needs to be special, in a similar way to how going to a restaurant, a concert, the theatre or opera is special. But it just isn't. The whole thing, like rail and air travel, has been so thoroughly comoditised that none of the romance is left.

There's a gorgeous little cinema in Lynton that has one small screen, sixty-odd seats and definitely isn't posh. The picture's not the best, the sound isn't overly great and the seats make your arse hurt. However, the staff really care and the atmosphere is so intimate and well-balanced that it becomes the perfect place to take a relevant female. You can't just turn up - you have to reserve your seats days in advance and the next nearest cinema is over an hour's drive away. You have to really plan an entire evening around it as it's in the middle of nowhere. I watched PS I Love You there and genuinely didn't mind the mind-shattering crapness of the film because the environment was awesome and because, well dammit, I'd worked so hard to even get in there.

All of which makes the little place exciting - in a way that the local multiplex next to Nando's might never be able to match. But if the bog-standard cinema around the corner could bottle even just a little of that, I'd be back like a shot.

Perhaps then, I'm "fortunate" to live 60 miles from the nearest multiplex.

Relevant-female-friendly places are indeed an attraction. But if you're happy with a 40" TV, I guess there's no hope. I watched Interstellar in IMAX 3D in Singapore & the screen was so fracking large I had to physically move my head at times to see details across the beautifully shot screen. That said, the cinema was less magical than my local Cornish one.

Comfy sofas, better choice, 3D could all be replicated in a cinema. Pause perhaps not.

But no home setup can convey the enormity of a decent cinema screen & sound.

The cinemas near me are pretty decent. Sure the food for the most part is the usual cinema fare but the screens are modern and clean and variety is good. Prices aren't even that bad for a 2D movie showing. The Showcase has just had a refurb with an X-plus floor to celling screen and Dolby Atmos plus reclining seats in all screens and sofas style seats for those wanting to pay a premium. I don't know what more you could ask for really. Maybe a bit cheaper for the premium seats/shows I suppose might encourage more to attend.
