Just typed in a wonky URL, and instead of my regular browser error page, I get a custom Virgin Media page offering me a search.

This seems to be new - I’ve not seen that until today. Thankfully, I can opt out and that seems to have opted out the whole network, not just this machine, which is good.

It's their DNS servers.

I use OpenDNS which does something similar, but they're faster and more reliable than most ISPs servers. They also have some error correction in them, so if you put something a bit stupid then it will correct it. For example, if abcdefg.co.uk doesn't exist, it will try abcdefg.com for you automatically.

+1 for openDNS, sometimes BT's DNS servers are shocking. And don't get me started on Tiscali, TalkTalk et al.

I bloody hate that. You type one letter wrong and you're redirected to a totally different page so you have to type the whole darned thing in again rather than simply correcting the mistake!

A lot of ISPs seem to be taking this route. T-Online do it as well. They probably get cash for the landing page from the search company... :?

I find it quite handy.

I don't think it's turned on by default anyway. I think that's just something I've turned on for our account.
