McDonald's in crisis: can it fight off the Five Guys threat? | Business | The Guardian

Never heard of any of those... I haven't been in ANY fast food places in a long time, bar the local chippy. And that's only cos it's new and brightens up my worklife a little. I just don't care otherwise. You? Or when were you last in McD's? Have you been cheating on it? ;)

They're all American branches. Five Guys is very good but it does just one burger in different variations (indeed the veggie one is the same as the regular burger but without the patty!). You don't get a plastic tray to eat from - you unfold the foil from your burger and eat off that. They don't do milkshakes. You get fries in two flavours but that's it.

There's a couple of Five Guys in London.
Caused a bit of a giggle between the staff when a student was proud of 'having Five Guys in Soho'.

You reminded me of a scene in Arrow recently - fries were being dipped in an ice cream sundae. Is this an especially American thing? The characters were loving it at least ;)

The one in Birmingham didnt when I went. No idea about now. The burger was okay. The chips were awesome. But I've had better from Handmade burger iirc.

Never seen any of them, although Chipotle got mentioned a lot on This Week in Google a couple of years ago.

We get a pizza delivered every now and then (once a month or less) and 2 or 3 times a year we get a burger from Johnny's Pantry, a local (only in Bramsche) fast food restaurant. I don't think I've been in a McDonald's since 2010.

There is a KFC in Osnabrück, but that is a 40 minute round trip for a takeaway (and it is "out of town", so we go there rarely) and I've no idea where the next Burger King is, I think about half an hour up the autobahn as a rest stop I think. We had a Subway franschise here, but they lasted less than 6 months, before they closed again.

Döner is very popular here (the most sold fast food in Germany and among the most healthy), followed by the Bratwurst /Currywurst. I think pizza is number 3, I'm not even sure burgers make it into the top 5 fast food meals in Germany.

Of the ones listed, I've only eaten in McDonalds and Five Guys. I think the biggest problem that McDonalds have, and which their CEO made no mention of in his article, is that their burgers taste like [LIFTED] compared to someone like Five Guys' offering. Even just comparing one of their chicken burgers with a KFC equivalent (so hardly an upmarket alternative like some would suggest Five Guys is) and it's woeful by comparison.

I do think McDonalds is just now bland. I might go once in a while but TBH there are far better places to get burgers from. The only real reason I go MaccyD's now is 24/7 store nearby and drive thru. If we're gonna sit and eat a burger somewhere I'd rather go elsewhere. Even nandos is more preferable.

One of the last times I ate a beefburger (any sort from plain, though Big Mac etc.) at McDonald's was around 2005, I bit into it and fat gushed out the burger and sprayed all over my shirt.

McDonald's isn't food. Simple.

I eat it once in a blue moon and then feel sick with myself afterwards.
