UK has seen 'Brexit-related' growth in racism, says UN representative

Brexit has contributed to an environment of increased racial discrimination and intolerance, the UN special rapporteur on racism has said, as she identified a range of institutional prejudices that plague the lives of ethnic minorities in Britain.

Speaking at the end of her mission to the UK, Prof Tendayi Achiume pointed to a Brexit-related growth in “explicit racial, ethnic and religious intolerance”, including extreme views that have gained ground in mainstream political parties of the left and the right.

Airbus warns no-deal Brexit could see it leave UK

Airbus has warned it could leave the UK if the country exits the European Union single market and customs union without a transition deal.
The European planemaker said the warning was not part of "project fear", but its "dawning reality".

Airbus employs about 14,000 people at 25 different sites in the UK.

Last week, the outgoing president of the CBI said sections of UK industry faced extinction unless the UK stayed in the EU customs union.

BMW joins Airbus in Brexit warning

The car giant BMW has followed plane-maker Airbus in warning about the consequences of Brexit uncertainty.

BMW UK boss Ian Robertson says clarity is needed by the end of the summer. BMW makes the Mini and Rolls Royce and employs about 8,000 people in the UK.

This is crunch time. The Brexit lot just can‘t stand around in an cloud of insouciance and say “yeah, things will be fine, don’t worry” any more. They’ve had two years since the vote to come up with something credible.

You know in that story there WAS actually a wolf, right? The people who were foolish were the ones who didn't listen to the boy's warnings because they didn't trust him any more. They got eaten.

Quote:
There once was a shepherd boy who was bored as he sat on the hillside watching the village sheep. To amuse himself he took a great breath and sang out, "Wolf! Wolf! The Wolf is chasing the sheep!"

The villagers came running up the hill to help the boy drive the wolf away. But when they arrived at the top of the hill, they found no wolf. The boy laughed at the sight of their angry faces.

"Don't cry 'wolf', shepherd boy," said the villagers, "when there's no wolf!" They went grumbling back down the hill.

Later, the boy sang out again, "Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep!" To his naughty delight, he watched the villagers run up the hill to help him drive the wolf away.

When the villagers saw no wolf they sternly said, "Save your frightened song for when there is really something wrong! Don't cry 'wolf' when there is NO wolf!"

But the boy just grinned and watched them go grumbling down the hill once more.

Later, he saw a REAL wolf prowling about his flock. Alarmed, he leaped to his feet and sang out as loudly as he could, "Wolf! Wolf!"

But the villagers thought he was trying to fool them again, and so they didn't come.

At sunset, everyone wondered why the shepherd boy hadn't returned to the village with their sheep. They went up the hill to find the boy. They found him weeping.

"There really was a wolf here! The flock has scattered! I cried out, "Wolf!" Why didn't you come?"

An old man tried to comfort the boy as they walked back to the village.

"We'll help you look for the lost sheep in the morning," he said, putting his arm around the youth, "Nobody believes a liar...even when he is telling the truth!"

Brexit: Marchers demand final Brexit deal vote

Tens of thousands of people have marched in central London to demand a final vote on any UK exit deal, on the second anniversary of the Brexit vote.

Organisers of the People's Vote march say Brexit is "not a done deal" and people must "make their voices heard".

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-44586638

I genuinely am in two minds over this. Part of me says that, yes, we should have a say. Somoene outide of No 10 must be asked the question, and must answer it. Either in Parliament, with a vote of MPs, or to the public. Trusting May and her shower of goons to make the final decision seems idiotic, and too easy for them to bend the deal in favour of thier own political aims and goals. It’s not like Labour are bieng any more use than a chocolate fireguard in this respect. The only party that seems to be providing a decent opposition in this matter is the SNP.

The other part of me feels that a vote will only help galvanise the entrenched positions, with the Leave lot spinning this as another way for “the establishment” to “thwart Brexit”, and the end result being that people with racist and otjer extreme views feel more empowered than before, and will send this country down and even uglier path than it is already. If you think that the tabloid headlines have been nasty whenever the Houses of Parliament show a bit of soverignty and require more scrutiny, then I suspect that you ain’t seen nothing yet.

So you're hoping that ports have to shut, planes can't take off or land, the NHS can't get medicines or isotopes and millions of Brits who retired abroad suddenly lose all healthcare?

Must be cozy under that rock
