Old fivers must be spent or banked by next Friday - but you can swap defunct notes

I knew it was odd that I'd gotten so many fivers (credit card got hacked so I was briefly back on pishy cash), but I didn't put it together... Knew about the coin, not about this!

I don't have any old fivers in my wallet but there are some kept in an emergency cash fund I keep in the house. Must get round to swapping those.

Edit: ION I managed to get a new £1 as change on Friday, and then promptly spent it for parking.

I've got a fiver I need to get shot of, and will no doubt find more... Gave my first new pound coin to the nephew.

Ernie, does this include fivers from over here as well, or is it just the English ones?
I'm confused.

Quote:
In Scotland, leading banks started issuing their own polymer fivers last autumn, and since then they have gradually been withdrawing the paper version – however, there is no specific published final end date. (There are no plans by note issuers in Northern Ireland to switch to polymer, though one, Northern Bank – now Danske Bank – was the first in the UK to issue a polymer fiver way back in 1999.)

Seems just to be the English ones, though it'll be interesting to see how it plays out. I've gotten some seriously pressed, old Bank of Ireland fivers recently, suggesting banks and shops are wanting rid of them IMO.

As if there wasn't enough of a problem with us spending Northern Ireland notes in England, this just goes and adds an extra layer of confusion to the problem. *sigh*

My thoughts exactly. That being the case, we really should phase out our own fiver over here. The plastic one makes more sense every which way.
