No long story short, Kindle or Kobo?
For some reason I've never liked the idea of proprietary formats, and built in advertising that can be removed for an extra cost. However the majority of reviews laud the Kindle. So which e-reader for about £100?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I got my other half a Kindle Fire and she loves it. From what I've seen of it, it is very good.

I'd go for a full-on e-reader rather than use a tablet with the kindle app. Less screen glare, and vastly increased battery life.
Neither Kindle or Kobo readers are bad choices.

I have the kindle paperwhite - and really like it esp the long times between needing to re-charge
While I did not want to be locked into the whole Amazon eco system thanks to Calibre you can encode any doc into the kindle format so you can buy books from other sources

I have the Kindle app' installed on my mobile and tablet. In fairness, I only use it indoors, so screen glare is not an issue. YMMV.

I'd be lost without my Paperwhite. I would prefer the Voyage for its page press sensors but the RRP is too steep. Maybe when it's on offer as Kindle devices regularly are?

We have had Kindles for many years now. Also KindleUnlimited subscription.
My wife has a Paperwhite (1st generation) and I have a Voyage. Both are excellent (and the current Paperwhite is somewhere between the two).
Definitely much better than a tablet for reading in bed.
I have a friend who swears by Kobo...
Look at what you need most from them (especially the background services etc. that support the device) and make a decision based on that.

Thanks for the info guys.
I've decided to go with the Paperwhite for the both of us. Been meaning to get an ereader for years but never got around to it. I've used Calibre before so know what to do there, but was hoping to have a choice of supporting the little guys without all the conversion.
Anyhoo, all done now, just need to find time to start reading.

I bought them both on my Amazon account, my wife doesn't have an account. That means that the library is shared, the only downside is that if 2 people read the same book at the same time, it keeps telling you that the current place has changed and do you want to jump to the new position.

I went Kobo and haven't regretted it, but I do only read and look up the occasional facts with it.
