A mate sent me this...
Quote:
The traditional suet pudding Spotted Dick has been renamed "Spotted Richard" at a council canteen - because customers keep making jokes.

The new name for the dessert, with another alternative Sultana Sponge, has appeared on the menu at Flintshire Council headquarters in Mold.

The council said catering staff made the decision after "immature comments".

The chief spokesman for the council was Roger Meharder.

I made that last bit up.

Whatever next?

Oh dear, immature coments. Those involved should be shot.

Anyone with spare immature comments, see http://www.brandrepublic.com/Design/News/929986/Maoam-says-carnal-wrapper-complaint-genuine/

Linux_user, that is just really, really sick. I'm glad it took me a while to figure it out.

There are a world of possible foodstuffs to abuse for Carry On style hilarity. Plums, pears, baps, buns, melons, coconuts..

Didn't one of the supermarkets rename the noble pollock fish to something else because it even sounded like a vaguely rude word?

I think spotted dick always raises a slight chuckle. Surely that's the only reason anyone serves it?

I find his letter most amusing.

He says "I demanded to see the shop manager and during a heated exchange my wife became quite distressed and had to sit down in the car park."

I think the truth was more "I demanded to see the shop manager and during a humiliating exchange my wife became quite embarrassed and had to hide in shame."

Without Spotted Dick, what else would our foreign visitors giggle at on the menu, when their British hosts deadpan their pudding requests?

Exactly. Jokes about spotted dick are as traditional as the pudding itself.

In fact, I find it to be slightly bland - would it be as popular as it is if it didn't have a silly name?

Three words: Daily Mail reader.

It's more likely that their kids (Benjamin and Ofelia? Seriously? :? ) will be emotionally scarred by their dad' s reaction (oh, the embarrassment!) than they would ever be by a cartoon picture of some fruit.

I feel sorry for children forced to live with parents like that.

Living with daily mail readers creates much of the frustration that makes me ofload it on the internet.

Gah! Some people have no sense of b!oody humour. Who cares if the name raises a chuckle at the canteen checkout.
