I use 1Password on the Mac and iPhone. I also have an envious friend on PC can anyone suggest a Windows based alternative that might meet his needs? It would need to have the following features. 1) Auto login for forums and websites. 2) Save a login/password on one computer to have it synced to the same keychain on all of his computers. 3) If possible have it sync to his Blackberry (1P syncs to the iPhone of course) 4) It would be nice have it put a button in all of his browser toolbars like 1P does but that is not essential as long as there was a quick way to access the app. What is the best way to manage hundreds of passwords on a PC? CC p.s. This clip shows the features and the kind of program I am after for him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaCHlMF5Vwc ![]() |

I remember a thread like this not so long ago. I'm sure you posted on it? They seem like a huge security risk to me, but there are quite a few: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Password_managers http://keepass.info/ is possibly the most widely acknowledged. If you do use one, please be sure that the master password is something very secure. If you lose the memory stick or laptop with it all on, you want it to take an expert more than a few days to crack it by brute force. Also, remember to lock it if you step away from your computer. I used to simply use a few strong passwords I could actually remember, but the insane security policies enforced at a lot of companies that make you to change it every few weeks to something with 9000 non-alphanumeric characters obviously makes that impossible. I still remember my personal important passwords using my head brain thing, but the stupid work ones I have to write down on a postit note stuck on my laptop or in a red notebook labeled "secret passwords" which I keep on my desk. That's not a joke, btw... Out of interest, who uses their browser's password remembering and form-filling features? The one on Firefox is wonderfully insecure, although I don't really know about the others. |

I use password safe on Windows, it is free and you can download it from Sourceforge - get it from there to be sure it is a legit copy... It doesn't sync with Blackberry or Mac though. That said, I create my own passwords for each site and only use it very occasionally as I remember 99% of my passwords. |

My memory isn't too bad, so I don't use password storage.
![]() Can you imagine some fool downloading a hacked copy of a password safe? |

Yes, I can... wasn't there a big thing a while ago, about people downloading copies of the Windows 7 Beta which had trojans, even though it was available as a free download? |

I must confess I use 1Password as well. It is the best decision I made. I now have 109 passwords for every imaginable site. Best of is that you can sync it with other macs and even use it for serials. I am only now starting to add my serials to it as a back up to my license keeper, which is more elegant for that purpose. Password managers take time to set up but save a lot of effort once done and they can defeat key loggers as well. |
