Just be aware that some free fonts, whilst being perfectly legal and above board, may be “damaged” - that is to say that the software used to create them may not do a particularly good job of creating the necessary data and files. Such damaged fonts can cause system instabilities, or software instabilities. Speaking from the position of someone who has been using Macs and has a lot of fonts (yes, many from free font depositories as well as many I have paid for), I have noted that the fonts I have downloaded for free are more often than not reported by the system as being “damaged”. Apple’s own ATSUI type rendering engine is quite sensitive to wonky fonts. These fonts have brought about software crashes or peculiar behaviour. Removing the fonts restored normality.
I am not sure if Windows is similarly affected - I would imagine that it could be. It’s worth finding a font diagnostics tool to scan the fonts for any incompleteness before adding them to your collection.
Free fonts will more often than not not have a full character set. You will get numbers, some punctuation, A-Z and a-z, but don’t expect to be able to type Café with the accent!
