Started the install at 17:28, it is currently finishing up the installation (17:42), including installing updates! The start-up is very nice, very modern and makes you feel like you are starting an operating system which was designed and built in the 21st Century - animation, colour and smooth text suited to the resolution of your display, from the get-go.
BTW, I did a complete re-install, upgrading from Vista Ultimate 32-bit to Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I don't need the extras that Ultimate came with, what I wanted was Vista Professional (i.e. media player + domain logon)...
Vista was a huge leap forward over XP in startup, but it is left in the dust by WIndows 7.
Unlike XP or Vista, it automatically recognised my video card and monitor default resolution and frequency during the install, no plodding around in 800x600 until you manage to get to the manufacturers website to download drivers. Talking of which, unlike XP and Vista, there was no scurrying back and forth between a working computer and the one I'm installing, trying to find out which network chipsets are inside and finding compatible drivers!
17:47, username and password requested and now asking for product key... And automatic activation of Windows and it got the correct time (to the second) from an internet service - I have an atomic clock next to the computer and they were in sync).
17:50, the desktop is being prepared...
17:51, the desktop is up and the installation is complete!
Specs:
Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad - default clock 4GB DDR2 500GB SATA nVidia 8600GS graphics LG SyncMaster 24" display.
Going the "whole hog" now and installing MS Security Essentials, I'll leave Norton off for now...

It is just a simple weather station/clock combo from Aldi... Cost about €15, ISTR.
Working on some pics of Windows 7 etc. Will upload them at the end.
Edit: Sound card etc, also seem to have been automatically found. Will load up the device manager in a sec and see what is what...
Edit 2: The only thing that wasn't auto-installed was the TV card...

Ok, they've changed rather more than I thought they had!
Last atomic clock I saw was a lot larger and probably cost a hell of a lot more.

iMac found the Windows 7 machine without any problems... Copying my data back across, 25GB, should take about 12 minutes, according to the Copy status window.

Copying speeds are pretty good, it was copying from USB and network at around 24-30MB/s, faster than XP and Vista on the same machine (and the crippled port on the iMac), but Linux managed around 40MB/s with the same drive on my old Athlon 64 machine...

I'm rebuilding my rig next Friday (23rd) if my Win7 comes so will keep a log how long the install etc takes - also gone for Pro version as I need to use RDP. All my old kit will be appearing in the "For Sale" article shortly once rig rebuilt

Company laptop qualifies for a "free" upgrade, so waiting for confirmation on that as well.
Impressed so far. I sort of miss the "3D" taskbar of Vista, but the transparent taskbar of 7 sort of goes better with Aero, even if it feels somehow less "slick". But the functionality of the taskbar is vastly improved, with the hybrid between Windows and OS X's Dock...

I'm using the Landscapes theme, which is getting annoying, the changing backgrounds are lovely, but the "boing" sound for inserting new devices (USB sticks etc.) is a loud chiming sound! I'll edit it at some point. The galleries are interesting and change without me noticing. The photos for the backgrounds are stunning. Pinning apps to the Dock, erm, sorry, Taskbar is really useful. That plus Spotlight from Vista, erm, the Search-Box in the Windows menu, sorry, mean that you really very rarely need to look at the Windows Menu application list at all.

I've got an i5 motherboard kicking around, after reading this post I think I might build up another system and try out W7.

Yeah, because everyone has those slow old i5 boards just strewn around the house.

lol: Yeah, I see your point , I brought it when MSI launched their P55 and sold them off with the help off a few hand picked online retailers at half price, so I ended up with one just because they were cheap and I couldn't resist and now it just sits in my study.... greed just got the better of me DOH!
