I've cleaned PCs like those. I once pulled some fluff from the top of a heatsink only for it to peel off like a sheet of thick material! |

Yep, I've seen some like that. And they wonder why it's overheating and shutting down? I usually charge them extra for being scruffy barstewards. I haven't come across any animals in one yet. |

The big fan at the front of mine has resulted in a fluffy interior, but some air cans are on their way ![]() |

I gave my MacPro an internal check the other month - used my can of air to blast fluff from the fans. iMac G5 owners (and even modern Intel ones too) may not know that there is a vent behind the support arm. That can get clogged, and because it’s not obvious that the vent is there, you can easily miss it, and your machine’s performance will suffer. |

LOL at the last 2! I've also cleaned PCs like that before. I've opened a PC that was packed with about an inch of dust/fluff/scum over every surface. |

I've always cleaned the PC on a yearly basis. |

Did that on one of our servers this summer - the temperature in the room went over 40°C, the rack was up over 50°C and the server stopped working! ![]() Still trying to persuade the director that air con would be a good move - 8 servers in a rack in a 2nd story, south facing office, next to the window! ![]() Most of the machines here are from around 2002-2004 and have never been opened, some of them are pretty disgusting inside, although the ones in the Reg photos are worse... |

My dad's PC once looked like the old server-type thing did. He used his old Pentium 2 MMX PC for about 4-5 years straight, and when it would only work for a few minutes at a time, we opened it up and looked. It had like a blanket of dust over the HSF, a centimeter or so thick coat of dust on the PCI cards etc and a load of cobwebs in the bottom of the case. ![]() Needless to say, that machine is employed now as a file server. ![]() |

Anyone remember that urban legend about a guy taking his PC to be repaired, only for the shop to call him back and tell him it didn't work because the guts of the PC had been replaced by potatoes? I can't find it on google though... |

FAF, are you making up urban legends again? We've spoken about this. |
