I saw The Force Awakens yesterday for the first time.
I'm quite proud to say I managed to avoid all spoilers for the film. I'd also only seen the initial teaser and initial trailer.
I felt a little emotionally drained coming out of the cinema afterwards.

With the film, continuation of the story, or both?

The film. There's enough emotional beats in The Force Awakens that if you remember Star Wars from the first time around and you didn't have a tear in your eyes at least once during this new film, you should hang your head in shame.
I'm not going to go into specifics - spoilers - but I found this film a really good re-working of the original story, whilst at the same time continuing themes and introducing new characters to a new audience.
I didn't find it too derivitave, despite agreeing with Leeds_manc's rather tactless put-down of the plot.
I was able to look past all the references to previous films, and recognise that this was essentially laying out a fairy-tale to Rey and Finn and telling them that the stories they heard as children, the fables told to them were all real and that these people actually existed.
It was as much about getting those characters on-board with the truth of the tale as it was for getting a modern audience to accept that the films that came before this one are still relevant to the continguing saga.
I can't begin to disagree with what jonbwfc says regarding the amount of throwback to the original trilogy of films, but I think it was done in an organic enough way that, for me, it wasn't a problem.
I really, really enjoyed this film.

Did the Starkiller base blow up Coruscant, you know, just to be sure?

Quote:
It is unclear what happened to the planet during the time between Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi. Upon release of The Force Awakens, however, there was some confusion as to whether or not Starkiller Base destroyed it. However, the similar-looking planet depicted in the film, is Hosnian Prime, which, by the events of the film, served as the capital of the New Republic.

Oh. Apparently not.

Advanced apologies for any minor spoilers:

I don't see why they would have. Also, wasn't the firing of the Starkiller based in the film the first use?
Given how old the SW universe is I imagine pretty quite a few of the Old Republic/Empires core worlds will looks pretty similar to Coruscant anyway (as in basically covered in a massive continuous city)
In any case, Coruscant was the capitol of both the Old Republic and the Empire. I can't conceive of a reason why the First Order would particularly want to destroy it as they appear to be a continuation of the Empire in some way. In addition, the resistance/rebellion didn't seem to be based there.
It's possible that's where the holographic boss is based.

Star Wars unlikely to topple Avatar as biggest movie of all time | Den of Geek
http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/star-wa ... f-all-time

I hate it that two sh1te James Cameron films are so high in that particular chart. My possibly politically incorrect guess is that even Star Wars' double and triple viewings can't compensate for the same thing happening with what became Cameron's legion of female viewers - that demographic was something he caught on to with the test screening cards from Titanic. He realised they were waiting on a blockbuster with romance in it. And as we now know with Twilight etc, he was way ahead of the curve.

Just to keep this thread from falling off the bottom of the first page, Star Wars : Rogue One news has a familiar presence being felt.
