So, how do you lay out your desktop for working?

We usually get the desktop background threads, but how do you organise your desktop, when you are working on the machine?

I usually also have several RDP windows open over top of my web browser, but I tend to keep the far right free for comms, the far left for e-mail and in the middle I have my "real" apps running. Navision is the only one that tends to get run full-screen (on the left monitor)...

Since I have only have 1 monitor, everything is maximised and I either click on the taskbar entry or alt tab to what I need to be in. I only have two programs open all the time: Outlook and our helpdesk software. Anything else I run when I need to use it.

I have errr 3 monitors on my desk. I use the PC with 1 screen for Lotus Notes and Remedy and usually have Firefox running too then I have 2 screens on mac. I use the 1st one for Adium chat and the main monitor for ARD and anything else I have going on. In the mornings I'll be calculating the stats and entering them on to an excel spreadsheet on the mac. I like spreading my work over numerous machines ;)

I have 2 monitors and have all my regularly used programs open on startup.

I also use MultiMon to manage the 2 desktops.

Unfortunatel I don't have access to FTP stuff from here so I can't upload a pic :(

Hmm...

I may be able to email it to myself though...

Did that work for everyone else?

1 Monitor and 1 Window at a time. Most of my diary management is Lotus Notes, travel arrangement is the interweb and the rest is Word/Excel. I like things simple and if I have too many windows open at a time I get all flustered and can't find anything. For some reason my brain won't accept "Alt+Tab" so I mouseclick my tabs in the bar at the bottom.

Outlook, Word and linked databases as far as the eye can see over two screens...

IIRC that's the first level of FarCry, no?

Never seen it from that height before though.

How did you get up there?

If you go to that lagoon (for want of a better word) where the aircraft carrier is, you can find a place where you can walk up the hill. You can also find the helicopter that attacks you on the next level hidden in a ditch. Though even if you kill the crew then, they still attack you on the top deck of the carrier. Just don't drop into the ditch as it's impossible to get out.

So you don't actually run any applications? ;)

Not many. I don't use that many and I shut them down when I've finished.
This morning I booted my laptop, went on the internet and that's about it. If you're referring to the lack of desktop icons, I like to keep my desktop clear. I either use quick launch for common programmes or the start menu for ones I rarely use.

I have lots of windows, and how I manage them depends on how many machines I have going. Only one 19"-er per machine, though, which sucks somewhat. I can't upload a screenshot, sorry.

No, I was refering to my OP, where I said, we've seen desktop backgrounds before, but how do you organise the multiple windows on the desktop (chat client, email, browser etc.)... ;)

On my desktop, I have the wastecan and that's it.

I usually maximise the application I'm using.

I think Windows promotes users to maximise windows, where as OS-X, KDE, Gnome and others don't. I prefer non-maximised windows, and I hope future (or even current - I've only seriously used XP and a bit of Vista of MS's last 3 OS families) versions of Windows adopt this style.
