The BBC is clearly overdosing on Dr Who at the moment. However, there is one thing they have kept pretty qiet about that lurks in the shedules after Christmas. That’s The Day of the Triffids. Apart from a glimpse of Eddie Izzard in a recent Crimble Trailer, the BEEB has been rather silent about their new adaptation. This means that it’s either one of those gems they want to keep quiet about, or it’s utter rubbish and they have to put it on for whatever reason they have to do so. A Google on the subject throws up more hits for the 1980’s adaptation than anything about the new version. http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressr ... fids.shtmlWell, Justin, you had better start hyping this “event of 2009” then. Coz so far, I think very few people know about it.

The 1981 series has really strong memories of childhood for me, and I quite liked the film from the sixties as well.
Be interesting to see how this version fares, I suspect if the BBC is not making a big song and dance about it then they have doubts as to how it's going to be received. I hope those doubts are based on it being an overly dark, nihilistic and gory post apocalyptic vision as opposed to being gay and lame. We want gore.

BBC4 showed the 1980’s version a year or so ago, and it’s still a bloody good bit of TV. Hopefully we’ll have feeding Triffids, though IIRC they tend to wait for their food to start to decompose rather than go it it with slavery fangs. Triffids sting, mostly across the face (they go for the eyes), so the potential for facial wounds is there. I am hoping for realism rather than OTT effects. Nothing like grounding your horror in factual science to make for true creepiness.

Didn't they make a massive thing last year about some other survivalist drama along similar lines (bird flu kills almost everyone, and then some wretched survivors have to rebuild civilisation). That dissapeared up its own jacksie so far as I recall. Perhaps the BBC only hypes its crap.

That was Survivors - apparently a second series is in the pipeline. This is a remake of a much older series of the same name, written by Terry “I made up the DAleks. And Blakes 7” Nation.

I remember Survivors from when I was a nipper. It was a good series. Didn't it also star the guy who played Stig? (memory getting cloudy)

Survivors wasn't all that bad, but the theme has been done before- what hasn't?! I will watch the second series.
I am wondering whether I heard mention of The Day of the Triffids but that it only registered subconsciously. A couple of weeks ago, I commented on how they could do with remaking it with modern effects and then "Bingo!" I hear that the BBC has done just that.
They certainly haven't bothered making too much effort to let anyone know, though as this is only the second time I have (consciously) seen or heard any reference to it.

Maybe the Triffids got loose during filming and the whole team's been eaten. [sorry - it's been a long week ]

I certainly feel that the book needs another read.

It’s affectionate name for “The BBC”. See also “Auntie Beeb” , ”Auntie”, “The Beeb”. The BBC Micro was also referred to as a “Beeb”. Aren’t you supposed to be photographing girlies?

Well, Eddie Izzard was on Jonathan Ross’ show last night and they totally failed to mention it. Reading the synopsis for part 2 in the Radio Times leads me to believe that they are going “off piste” with this one.
